Day 1: Hannover to Catania
The accommodation - Camplus Guest d'Aragona - was a student residence and we had excellent rooms and good safe storage for the bikes. Friendly and helpful staff, good value for money.
Our first pizza in Sicily was a huge disappointment - Noe u Osteria Sicilianu in Via Auteri - ready-made pizza base with lukewarm toppings.
We explored the city and then returned to the accommodation for the pick-up from the guide from EtnaTribe for the Etna Sunset Tour. It was quite a long journey but worth it.
Day 2: Catania to Taormina (49 km)
This was our first day cycling and it was a fairly easy day although there quite a few steep hills.
Taormina is spectacular but full of tourists.
Our target for the day was really Toarmina but because it is fairly expensive we had an appartment in nearby Giardini Naxos. We also had our evening meal in a restarurant on the shore.
The accomodation Casa le Palme was hard to find and up a steep hill.
Day 3: Taormina to Piraino (87 km)
We had breakfast in a bakers in Giardini Naxos. This was a very long and hard day with many long steep climbs as we travelled around the north side of Etna.
On the way we stopped at Le Gole dell'Alcantara.
We arrivced late at Piraino and stayed the night at a small hotel on the beach called the Hotel Ristorante La Scogliera. Very friendly and helpful staff at reception and in the restaurant.
We had nice simple rooms facing out to sea and the evening meal was very good. Excellent value for money.
Day 4: Piraino to Cefalù (86 km)
We had a very nice appartment - Residence Kalura - quite luxurious with two bathrooms and three bedrooms.
Day 5: Cefalù to Palermo (75 km)
Our accomosdation for the night was a small ground floor appartment in a quiet backstreet - La Casa di Vicio It was fairly basic but convenient for exploring the city with good storage for the bikes.
Day 6: Palermo to Gela (79 km)
The Hotel Antiche Mura Gela was the best accomodation on the trip. We had enormous rooms with large beds and it seemed very stlyish and luxurious.
Day 7: Gela to Scicli (70 km)
Evening meal in the Osteria del Ponte
Nice litte apparment - casa vacanze o bilicu
Day 8: Scicli to Siracusa( 77 km)
After breakfast in the appartment the day's trek started with some very steep climbs out of Scicli. Great views over the town. This was quite a hard trek and we decided to catch the train from Noto.
We stayed the night at an hotel quite near the train station called Sorella Luna. This was slightly strange place and we all had to share one room.
Day 9: Siracusa to Catania (70 km)
We cycled to Augusta and cought the train from there to Catania.
Close to Augusta we passed an amazing hanger built for airships.
We returned to the Camplus Guest d'Aragona and found our collection of carboard boxes for transporting the bikes was stil there
Day 10: Catania to Hannover
We spent the morning exploring Catania before starting the preparation for the flight home.
